Despite being a puzzle game at heart, players can level up and attribute skill points to grow their characters. Players can match skull gems together to deal damage, or match other colored gems to use skills. But instead of traditional turn-based RPG battles, Puzzle Quest asks players to play a “match 3” game - like if Bejeweled had combat. In the Puzzle Quest series, players move in a 3D space, talk to characters, and fight enemies. Infinity Plus Two and 505 Games offered few details beyond that in a news release, saying that the game will feature “gem-crushing,” head-to-head puzzle battles, and “a twist on traditional puzzle gameplay.” Puzzle Quest 3’s story takes place 500 years after the original Puzzle Quest.
Puzzle Quest 3 will also be the first full sequel in the series since 2010’s Puzzle Quest 2 in the interim, D3Publisher released a few spinoffs and a Nintendo Switch remaster of the original 2007 game. Scheduled to be released in 2021, this will be the first Puzzle Quest game since 505 Games purchased the franchise’s original developer, Infinity Plus Two, earlier this month. Puzzle Quest 3, the third mainline entry in the hybrid role-playing/puzzle game series, is in development on multiple platforms, publisher 505 Games announced Thursday.
